A closer look at what the Sun is doing

NASA Scientists are tracking solar activity to learn more of its secrets. It announced in September the release of a big solar flare. Pretty unusual in a solar minimum when it supposedly has a quiet period.

Its Solar Dynamics Observatory tracks activity over these solar cycles and wants to get a longer term understanding of the Sun’s overall output.

NASA plans a mission to “Touch the Sun,” in which a probe will be sent closer to the surface than any spacecraft before. The mission will explore the Sun’s outer atmosphere, making observations that should help researchers better understand the workings of our star.
