D-STAR takes off
D-STAR (Digital Smart Technologies for Amateur Radio) a digital voice and data protocol developed for use in amateur radio has arrived in VK3 with eager radio amateurs buying enabled transceivers.
Industry sources expect D-STAR to have a rapid uptake in line with Aussie?s being early adopters of new technology, the ubiquitous mobile phone being just one example.
A leading ham radio retail outlet has received a stream of inquiries since announcing D-STAR?s availability on its website.
The ICOM transceivers being sold include both analogue and D-STAR digital. Most of the digital action currently is centred on 145.450MHz simplex.
The latest development is that D-STAR voice will be permitted to be used by Foundation Licensees. The WIA has announced that it is allowed by the ACMA because there is voice-in and voice-out.
However the WIA advises that Foundation Licensees will be required to inhibit or disable the other functions of D-STAR such as texting or messaging, and of course only use it on 2m and 70cm.
Further statements about the regulatory aspects of D-STAR along with changes
to band plans to accommodate this new kid on the block are expected soon.
