Talkin' and tappin' D-STAR
Interest in D-STAR continues to grow although activity is so far confined to simplex mostly on the newly recommended simplex frequencies on 2m and 70cm.

Members of the Central Goldfields Amateur Radio Club at Maryborough in Victoria will learn a lot more about D-STAR at the club's monthly meeting on Friday, 5 October.

Guest speaker will be Richard Hoskins VK3JFK, who heads up Automatic Position Reporting System (APRS) activity in VK3. An interesting aspect of D-STAR will be its connectivity with APRS.

Among the points of interest for CGARC members on Friday will be DPRS (theD-STAR style of APRS) and the short text message facility available in addition to digital voice.

Richard VK3JFK will be supported by another member of the D-STAR technicalteam, Peter Willmott VK3TQ. Work is continuing to get the WIA's Melbourne D-STAR repeater VK3RWN at Mt Dandenong on air, with the second repeater Amateur Radio Victoria’s VK3RMM Mt Macedon the next in line to join the global D-STAR network.

D-STAR YOUTUBE
Surprisingly there's very little about D-STAR on YOUTUBE, the video sharing website where users can upload, view and share clips, but there are two videos well worth a look.

D-STAR gazing
The new world of digital communication has arrived into the amateur radio community and D-STAR's internet gateway facility means that recorded data is used to show activity.

www.dstarusers.org shows the contacts being made, includes mapping and other resources.

Thanks for John Goda VK8HF for alerting D-STAR News to this facility.

Home-brewing D-STAR
Since its release by the JARL in 2001 of the D-STAR specification and design there has been interest in it not just from manufacturers but also from home-brew experimenters.

One example is the DVX Project uses some new IC's for an experimental stand-alone nearly complete D-STAR format 2m transceiver.

Moe Wheatley AE4JY delivered a paper on the DVX Project in April this year at the Southeastern VHF Society conference in Atlanta.

A3JY's first contact between the DVX transceiver and an Icom D-STAR radio was over a distance of 100 yards, followed by others within a half mile radius, demonstrating that the home-brew unit could communicate with the commercially made product.

The paper said the aim of the project was to create a means of experimenting and trying out various adaptations or variations formats to the D-STAR. For example, to double the data rate and bandwith so full duplex telephony can occur.
